Only God Forgives review by FAT Mike

A drug-smuggler named Julian (Ryan Gosling) thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld, sees his life get even more complicated when his mother compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible for his brother's recent death.

ONLY GOD FORGIVES is a mix of beauty, gore and intensity with some raw fight scenes but I felt like writer and director Nicolas Winding Refn, who Direct DRIVE, was trying to catch lighting in a bottle once again. ONLY GOD FORGIVES is shot beautifully and some of the scenes are real intense but the story is not there which kills. The film was shot in Bangkok, Thailand so a lot of the movie is spoken in Thai and Ryan Gosling is mute most of the time which makes the film a bit hard to know what’s going on. In the film Julian has these trippy moments that aren’t explained at all and they try to feel like a mix of drug hallucinations and Stanley Kubrick intensity with no answers on what’s going on.
I know I’m pounding this film but I really liked ONLY GOD FORGIVES but I know it’s not for everyone so it’s hard for me to recommend it to people .ONLY GOD FORGIVES is beauty to the eyes and confusing to the brain but if you’re a hardcore film fan I’d say check it out, cheers and remember life will never suck as long as there is a GOOD movie to watch.
