ELYSIUM review by FAT Mike
In the year 2154, the very wealthy live on a man-made space station while the rest of the population resides on a ruined Earth. A man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
When Elysium hit theatres back in August I didn’t care, BUT I WAS WRONG. I strongly enjoyed this film. The story is awesome and I loved the political undertone of what’s going on it today’s world with Mexico and the United States and what’s going on in today’s society with the growing wealth gap.
The Elysium cast was well chosen, I’m not a big Matt Damon fan but in this film he shows why he is still a leading man. Jodie Foster was amazing and ruthless; William Fichtner is always my favourite classy bad guy. The one person in Elysium that was a let down was Sharlto Copley; I really didn’t like him around the end and it felt like he did meet up to being Matt Damon’s opposite. The one actor I always enjoy seeing is Jose Pablo Cantillo and as soon as he’s in the film, he’s gone.
The action scenes are awesome, surprisingly gory and sometimes intense but I found the hand to hand fight scenes were weak which took away from the film a bit. I also felt a bit let down that we don’t get to see how powerful the exo suit really is.
It’s hard not to compare Elysium with District 9 and I found most of Elysium forgettable and like something was missing. What stood out to me is how scary it is that this could happen in the future after our life time.
Even though something feels to be missing Elysium has an amazing story, good cast, and some strong political undertones, Elysium shouldn’t be missed. Cheers and remember life will never suck as long as there is a GOOD movie to watch
